Research and Training

Members of the PIES lab conduct research in three main areas under the umbrella of primate behavioural plasticity and anthropogenic environmental change

Disability, physical impairment and behavioural plasticity in free-ranging Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata)

We conduct behavioural observations at the Awajishima Monkey Center, Awaji Island, Japan, in collaboration with the Mr. Toshikazu and Mrs. Hisami Nobuhara, and Dr. Kazunori Yamada and Dr. Masayuki Nakamichi at University of Osaka, and Dr. Yu Kaigaishi Postdoctoral Fellow at Nara Women’s University.

Linking behavioural plasticity, personality, welfare in rehabilitation and release of bearded capuchins monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus and Sapajus spp.)

We conduct behavioural observation and conservation work in northeastern Brazil, in collaboration with Dr. Renata Ferreira, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte.

Blond capuchin (Sapajus flavius) behaviour, behavioural plasticity, and use of space and habitat in Atlantic Forest fragments, northeastern Brazil

Behavioural and ecological data collection in the Atlantic Forest region of northeastern Brazil, in collaboration with Dr. Renata Ferreira, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte.

Graduate training in environmental and sustainability leadership

Sarah Turner was a co-investigator in the Leadership in Environmental and Digital innovation for Sustainability (LEADS) program, supported by NSERC-CREATE (PI Dr. Damon Matthews). This program provides additional training and funding for many of her students. LEADS sits at the intersection of Digital technologies and sustainability sciences, and involves training in advanced digital tools, leadership and communications skills building, and networking opportunities: https://sustainabilitydigitalage.org/leads/

Collaborations with Elastic Spaces

Sarah and her students have collaborated on various teaching, artistics and literary projects with members of the Elastic Spaces group and friends and associates, especially studio artist Leila Sujir, Jorge Zavagno, Concordia Librarian John Latour, and Elder Bill Jones of the Pacheedaht First Nation. Sarah was a member of the Editorial Committee for a recent publication: Chronicles of the Forest, by William Jones
