In long-standing collaboration with Mr. Toshikazu Nobuhara and Mrs. Hisami Nobuhara of the Awajishima Monkey Center, Dr. Masayuki Nakamichi and Dr. Kazunori Yamada at the University of Osaka, and Dr. Yu Kaigaishi, we observe monkeys at the Awajishima Monkey Center on Awaji Island, Japan. This work focuses on the behavioral ecology of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), particularly the behavioural plasticity in relation to physical impairment and disability, as well as foraging and movement ecology, and maternal and social behaviour.

At PIES Lab, we are grateful to have the opportunity to observe Japanese monkeys at the Awajishima Monkey Center, a beautiful and unique environment for the longitudinal study of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Our collaboration focuses on behavioral ecology and the long-term study and monitoring of the island’s unique macaque population.
